During the second semester of my freshman year at UNC, I had the opportunity in my digital storytelling class, MEJO 121, to create, record, and edit a 'microdocumentary' about someone. After careful deliberation, I decided to interview my older sister regarding her experience with her autoimmune disease and how she manages to balance it with her daily life. She discusses its symptoms, its treatments, and its effects on her mindset and mental health.
During my senior year of high school, I, along with two friends, wrote, directed, recorded, and edited our own short film as an 'independent study.' Over the entire year, we created storyboards, a script, shot list, hired a crew, and location-scouted for the project. These efforts culminated in a final presentation in front of the head of the school and other faculty members. We wanted to explore themes of loneliness and isolation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its effects on mental health.
